A what-if takes real life off the table, and that's exactly why it works. When nobody has to worry about rent, their boss or what their family would think, they answer with what they actually want. Whether someone picks a rewind button or a pause button tells you a lot about how they feel about their past and their present, and they barely notice they told you.

This deck is good for long drives, late dinners, sleepovers, classrooms and couples who want something beyond the usual catch-up. It opens with playful scenarios anyone can jump into, moves into personal ones about choices and values, and ends with a few quieter questions for when the group is relaxed. Nobody needs special knowledge, just a little imagination and a willingness to pick.

How to use these questions

Frequently asked questions

What are some good hypothetical questions?

Strong ones force a real choice. "Would you rather have a rewind button or a pause button for your life?", "If only one animal species could talk, which would you pick?" and "You can add one new holiday to the calendar, what is it?" are easy to start on and lead into surprisingly personal reasons.

Why are hypothetical questions good for conversation?

They lower the stakes. Talking about your actual career regrets can feel heavy, but talking about which fictional life you'd borrow for a week feels like a game. People end up sharing their values and wishes through the scenario, and everyone else gets to weigh in without it turning into advice or judgment.

What's the difference between a hypothetical and a would you rather question?

A would you rather question gives two set options. A hypothetical is more open: it sets up a situation and lets you answer however you like. Both are useful. Would you rather is faster and great for groups, while open hypotheticals take longer but tend to lead to deeper, more personal answers.

Are hypothetical questions good for kids?

Many of the light ones are. Kids love questions about superpowers, talking animals and inventing new holidays, and they're great for car rides or the dinner table. Skip the later levels, which ask about regrets and adult choices. Letting kids ask the adults a question, too, keeps the game going longer.
